TREATING SHOULDER COMPLAINTS
Do you experience pain or stiffness in the shoulders or upper arm? There are a bunch of causes for this, like overburdening specific muscles for long periods. Injuries can originate in heavy physical work, sports, the wrong sitting posture or just plain stress.
In many cases, a physiotherapist can resolve and/or prevent shoulder pain. Make an appointment with our physiotherapists and read more about the different types of shoulder maladies below.
CAUSES OF SHOULDER COMPLAINTS
- Long-term overexertion of the back by repetition of the same movement, such as tennis or working behind a desk;
- Overtaxing the back by heavy lifting, pushing or painting;
- The onset of osteoarthritis, where the joint becomes less lithe and agile;
- Radiation from neck pain;
- Good old stress.

SHOULDER COMPLAINTS IN A NUTSHELL
FROZEN SHOULDER
A ‘frozen shoulder’ is precisely that, and when you experience it, you will notice that your freedom of movement is restricted. In the case of a frozen shoulder, the capsule between the shoulder blades is swollen, and this is typically caused by prolonged overexertion and a tear in the tendon.
BURSISIT
A mucous membrane inflammation (also called ‘bursa’) is an inflammation of the mucous membrane caused by irritation of the shoulder tendons. With bursary inflammation, membranes are swollen, causing friction; this not only gives you a feeling of discomfort but can also limit your freedom of movement.
SHOULDER INSTABILITY
Shoulder instability is different; this is about excessive mobility in the shoulder. In this case, an unfortunate movement can be enough to cause you to dislocate your shoulder– ouch! In most cases, shoulder instability originates in a fall or accident; this causes the ligaments to be stretched and thereby have difficulty providing the shoulder with sufficient stability.CROSSFIT COMPLAINTS
Crossfit is a popular sport that gets you into shape quickly. Unfortunately, like most things, there is also a downside to it. Continuously overreaching your physical boundaries can generate shoulder complaints.Treating shoulder complaints
Do you experience shoulder complaints? The first thing to do is to keep moving. If the pain does not get less or if you can move the shoulder minimally,we recommend to consult a physiotherapist. A physiotherapist ensures that the pain is reduced and that you can move the shoulder again.
The exact treatment depends on the cause of the complaints and can consist of exercise therapy, dry needling or one of our other specialisations.
