Causes of back problems

The origin of back problems varies greatly. Often this is a manifestation of muscles, ligaments and bones that are out of sync and no longer working well together. Possible causes for back problems are:
  • Your back carries your entire body weight, and excess weight can change the centre of gravity in your body, overtaxing certain parts of the vertebrae.
  • It goes without saying that stress will mess you up, also your back.
  • Long-term overexertion of the back by repetition of the same movement, such as working behind a desk;
  • Overtaxing the back by heavy lifting, pushing or painting;
  • Professions in which you sit a lot. For example, spending a lot of time driving;
  • Excessive strain caused by sports and unnatural back movements;
  • Acute back problems due to a fall or accident.

Back problems in a nutshell

Back pain is divided into three categories: Upper back pain or cervical pain, lower back pain (lumbar or lower back pain) and middle back pain (thoracic or middle back pain).

Neck pain

Cervical pain is often caused by poor posture or prolonged stress. This pain is annoying but, in most cases, decreases within a few days.

Lower back

We all know this bad boy. Located in the lower regions of the back, this common malady can flare up with the slightest movement; this condition can develop acutely or over time by lousy sitting posture.

Middle back by Crossfit

Crossfit is a popular sport that gets you into shape quickly. Unfortunately, like most things, there is also a downside to it. Continuously overreaching your physical boundaries can generate back problems.
